    Eye exam before plaquenil

In Sjögren’s, Plaquenil is used to treat many symptoms of Sjögren’s including fatigue, joint symptoms of arthritis and arthralgias (joint pain), dry mouth and dry eyes. Similar to its use in systemic lupus erythematosus, many clinicians feel that it is useful in reducing general Sjögren’s “disease activity.” One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio.

My Scleroderma/morphea is spreading above my eye so I am pretty urgently looking to get on Plaquenil but obviously don't want to potentially screw up my eyesight! Does this sound right, starting the Plaquenil before a baseline test can be done? I made an appointment with my family doctor next week so that I can discuss it with her. The changes are most often permanent, but in some cases, vision has improved. Most rheumatologists recommend patients undergo a baseline eye examination prior to starting Plaquenil and be re-examined in the future depending on their risk for developing the condition. Risk factors include advanced age and having pre-existing retinal disease. Your eye care provider can examine the macula and detect subtle changes before you begin to notice any symptoms of problems. As a result, all patients taking plaquenil should have an examination approximately every six months. The macula should be examined through a dilated pupil. The incidence of Plaquenil related macular problems increases.

As with any medication, allergic reactions including skin rashes and non-allergic reactions can occur. This means that the side effects of Plaquenil are mild and infrequent compared with its potential benefits.

A 26-year-old black female presented in office for her annual comprehensive eye exam. Her medical history was significant for Plaquenil therapy spanning 12 years with a daily dose of 200mg twice daily. She presented with a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 OD and 20/20 OS. All preliminary testing revealed normal findings. Patients taking hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil. Before the tests you will be given eye drops that temporarily widen dilate your pupils. This is to allow more light into the eye to give a better view of your retina. The drops will make your vision blurry for a few I have only been taking plaquenil for 18 mths and recently found out that i have macula degeneration, my last eye exam was only 6 mths ago and there was no sign of anything then. i strongly advise 6 monthly eye exams and if there is the slightest blurring of vision get it checked out.
