Running fevers since going off plaquenil

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. My new rheumy, after running a trillion tests, has said that if it weren't for my previous rheumy's test results, he would say I did not have lupus. So, I asked about coming off of plaquenil. He said that I could stop plaquenil cold turkey. It slowly decreases effectiveness in the body. Dec 04, 2013 Luckydaisy My daughter has had recurrent fevers since she was seven months old. She is now four and one half years old. All of her fevers occur with sore throat, white spots on the throat, and stomach pain. Half of the time she experiences vomiting. These fevers have periodicity, and come in two- or four-week spurts.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

  5. SIDE EFFECTS. The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.

So that's the update. The lesson here is - for those who need to go off plaquenil, be careful about just going off it cold turkey. Obviously some of CAN do that, but if you don't know if you're one of them - better to be on the safe side and wean slowly. Take it from me! I am feeling much better after bumping my dose back up over the last few. It works well on the more systemic side effects of RA e.g. pericarditis, pleuritis, fevers, etc. which is why Plaq is also used with lupus patients. I've been on it for about 2 1/2 years now, and won't stop unless I have to since it works well for me, it's cheap, easy to take oral tablet only twice a day, and I'm past the worst of the side. Lynwood, I can't answer your question about weight gain or loss on plaquenil but I did go off plaquenil a few months ago and haven't been the same since. I regret the decision which had I made because I'd felt pretty well for quite some time and was doing my best to slowly get off as many meds as possible.
