Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

SIDE EFFECTS. The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure. Plaquenil is associated with potential side effects, one of which is particularly worrisome to people who have been prescribed the drug. Safe use helps to minimize undesirable side effects. Although Plaquenil is an older drug, it is still available and prescribed to some people who have rheumatoid arthritis or certain other rheumatic diseases. 3. Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues.

I think you can - I don't think what people are experiencing are withdrawal symptoms but their SjS symptoms flaring up without the Plaquenil. It's not the same as quitting an anti-depressant cold turkey where you do experience withdrawal. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks.
