    How long is plaquenil good

I know its a supposed small risk, but thanks to Google I've uncovered some horror stories about vision issues after just 8mo-1yr and people swearing it is actually not uncommon. I've had the worst flare of my life over late summer, I've had 3 early miscarriages in 1.5 years, I'm almost always in some type of achy state or dead tired. Potential side effects and very real risks make the medication seem ridiculously dangerous. I'm not as familiar with MCTD but what I do know is that is can be just as dangerous as SLE. Is the vision loss something that will stop if the medication is stopped?

Of all the drugs I've had to take for lupus, plaquenil is probably the most mellow. It is my understanding that if it affects your eyes, it's a slow onset type thing, so if you're having your eyes checked regularly every 6mos, you will be fine. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. Plaquenil takes quite a long time to get to its peak effectiveness depending on what you read, anywhere from 3 months to a year. Unless you are having significant side effects, try to give it at least 6 months before you decide it doesn't work for you.

Your external symptoms are a sign that something very wrong is going on inside you. Why in the world would anyone choose to poison themselves? You have a choice to make between letting your disease run rampant and continue to damage your body until it can no longer fight back or using one of the few weapons you have at your disposal to slow it down. Unfortunately, you have to roll the dice and decide which risk you'd rather take.

In 1 to 3 months you should start to feel better. You may continue to get better for up to 1 year. Most people who take Plaquenil also take other medicines for pain and stiffness.
